Minor League Roundup- August 27

By: Isaac Boloten

The Good
Matt Dean (Bluefield, high rookie)
2/4 - 1 K

Dean got right back on track Monday, after going 1-6 on the weekend, with 4 Ks. A definite surprise bright-spot of late. He appears to have taken the move to 1st base in stride. Yesterday's game raised his slash line to .332/.383/.495. Expect Dean to raise in Jays top prospect lists in the near future.

Rowdy Tellez (GCL, low rookie)
3/3 - 1 3B

A BlueJaysPlus favourite, he appears to have found his stroke in the GCL, going 3-3 a day after hitting his first professional home run. Rowdy, a larger guy, is not particularly quick, but from what I have heard, the triple was no fluke, and the footspeed isn't as horrendous as one may think.

Franklin Barreto (Bluefield, high rookie)
1/3 - 1 2B, 1 BB, 1 K

The struggling Barreto had a nice night, and the double was certainly a good sign. The walk is also something Barreto is rather familiar with, showing good patience in the GCL, with a .360 OBP. Not all that many Jays fans have heard of Barreto, but you will. Expect Barreto to be a top 5 Jays prospect in the very near future. He is just that right now, in my opinion.

The Bad

Ricky Romero (Buffalo, AAA)
6.1 IP - 5 H, 5 R (4 ER), 6 BB, 5 K

Romero struggled again with the Bisons last night. It seems like there's a new issue every time he takes the mound, and last night, it was his command, walking 6 batters in 6.1 innings. I suppose there's not much else to say about Ricky, you just have to wait things out and hope for the best.

Matt Boyd
2 IP - 3 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 2 K

The 2013 6th rounder struggled for Dunedin last night, in a very short outing. It wasn't horrendous, but it was bad enough be put in "the bad" for the roundup. Boyd, out of Oregon State, is a tall lefty. His fastball sits around 88-89, with an inconsistent changeup. His best pitch is probably his curveball, which sits around 71-75 MPH with some sharp bite to it.  It's worth noting that Boyd is already 22, so he's more advanced in development than most of the Jays 2013 draftees. Boyd could be a Buffalo Bison by the end of 2014.
